As a builder, if the home owner is looking to put either electric or hydronic floor heating in their home, we always turn to Floor Heat Australia. Their products are European-made and reliable.  The installation team always shows up with a comprehensive safety package and their vans are stocked with personal protective equipment which is important to us as safety is a priority on our sites. On the most recent job they completed for us, in Dover Heights, it was extremely important that they had the job done on time and according to the set schedule in order for the other elements of the project to fall into place accordingly. Floor Heat Australia had no problem completing the Hydronic floor heating installation (under a polished concrete floor) ahead of schedule. The installation was neat and tidy and the guys are always friendly and very efficient. I also like the idea that floor heating is based on the principle of ‘radiant’ heat, so it is much more efficient than traditional heating.  Their new DEVI DeviregTouch has also been a great addition to their range of thermostats and we’ve had a lot of good feedback on it because it is very easy to program and incredibly intuitive.

The system can prioritise renewable energy sources over non renewable energy sources to ensure minimal energy wastage. Electric Overhead Heating:

More traditional heating sources incorporate the use of forced air heat – air is heated remotely and then transported to various destinations via conduits or ducts. Obviously, much of that energy will be lost during transportation and lost through the doors and windows. With radiant heat, since air movement is not involved, the objects it comes into contact with (including people!) absorb most of the heat – up to 85%. Those heated objects then heat the surrounding air.

This results in delivering heat much the way the sun does, Comfortline ceiling mounted panels provide luxurious warmth and offer significant savings when compared with bottled LPG gas heaters (i.e. mushroom heaters) and other forms of traditional heating. The higher output models with multiple elements can run independent of each other giving greater control over the radiant heat output. A single high capacity Comfortline panel costs about 60c/hour to run.# A typical mushroom heater on bottled gas will cost five times that — up to $3.00/hour.^

Overhead Tube Heaters:

Schwank Overhead Tube Heaters have a fast pay-back and have proven their exceptional efficiency time and time again, reducing energy consumption significantly when compared to traditional heating systems used to warm large spaces.  The radiant heat emitted from these tubes not only considerably improves the warmth felt but it simultaneously reduces energy and operating costs. The savings usually range between 30% and 50% depending on the previous system and the building properties.

Hydronic Floor Heating:

With Hydronic Floor Heating systems water is warmed to 35–45ºC using a suitable heat source and circulated at a safe low pressure through extremely durable plastic pipes laid in or under the floor. Hydronic floor heating keeps running costs down by allowing a choice of energy source to heat the water:

Natural gas condensing boilers
Electric heat pumps
Wood fire stoves
Solar energy (in combination with the above)

Electric Floor Heating:

Intelligent floor sensing thermostats ensure accurate temperature control and minimal energy consumption of Devex’s Radiant Floor Heating systems.  Combining electric floor heating systems with F-Board insulation further increases the energy efficiency of this system by reducing downward heat loss.

Electric & Hydronic Under Timber Floor Heating

There’s nothing like beautifully finished timber flooring with the added bonus of warmth! Can you put underfloor heating under wooden floors? Yes you can!

Many home owners love combining the look and feel of warm timber floors to achieve optimium comfort in their living spaces.   Not only that, but they act as a wonderful and convenient conversation starter among guests!

Underfloor heating timber floors can be a very effective way of heating your home in Australia, however, there are a few restrictions to keep in mind. With timber floors, it is essential that the relative humidity of the timber not be reduced to the point where shrinking or warping of the timber could become apparent.

To avoid this, it is important to be aware of the heat restrictions noted by your timber flooring manufacturer when using both electric and hydronic floor heating systems. Typically, the floor heating system is controlled by using air and floor sensing thermostats to ensure that the floor surface temperature does not exceed 27°C (or whatever is recommended by your timber floor supplier).

In cases where a home or room is poorly insulated, a supplementary heat source may be required to ensure adequate comfort levels.

ELECTRIC underfloor heating for timber floors

For compatiblity with wooden or timber floors we recommend the following electric floor heating systems.

  • X cable CK 10, inscread under timber
  • X mat MG 150, under timber in a glue bed (with an air/floor thermostat)

 HYDRONIC underfloor heating for timber floors

Battened timber floors are best heated using the Diffusion Plate system, though installing hydronic heating pipes between batten on an existing concrete slab and filling up to the top surface level of the battens with a screed can also provide acceptable results provided suitable insulation is used.  A floating timber floor can be added on top of in-slab or in-screed flooring which has floor heating, but in all cases the temperature must be limited to comply with the timber supplier’s recommendations.

INSULATION

We strongly recommend thermal insulation with underfloor heating systems including in-screed and under batten timber installations. Thermal insulation is designed to be used beneath electric floor heating systems to reduce downward heat loss and aid in faster warm-up times. Without the use of thermal insulation, some of the energy generated from the heating elements travels downwards into the floor below leaving less heat available to warm the floor surface.

Quick Heat is designed for under floating timber and includes the required insulation beneath the electric heating cables. It has an embedded “recessed” aluminium plate that holds the cables.  The aluminium plate ensures an even distribution of the heat beneath the floor material. Speed Up is also designed to offer insulation under floating timber floors, however, is applied to hydronic floor heating systems in particular.

Under Carpet Heating: Is Installing Electric Heating Under Carpet Safe?

Considering under carpet heating? Floor heating is a modern and affordable way of heating your entire home or just those particular rooms that you may find yourself spending the most time in. It is silent, safe and offers lasting, gentle warmth from the ground up.

Electric floor heating is an incredibly versatile heating solution and can be applied under almost any floor covering. However, when it comes to installing these heating systems under carpet there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure the effective and safe operation of your system.

Important safety measures to take when installing under carpet electric heating:

Although most Australian cables comply with AS/NZS 60335Part2.96: Particular requirements for flexible sheet heating elements for room heating, many fail to meet the second approval standard, AS/NZ 60335.2.106: Particular requirements for heated carpets and for heating units for room heating installed under removable floor coverings.  We are not aware of any direct-acting under-carpet heater in Australia that complies with both standards, yet these systems continue to be installed directly under the carpet or underlay despite the increased safety risk. This means the cables are more exposed to damage endured from the surface of the carpet which could lead to an electrical safety risk resulting in carpet burns or worse yet, a house fire.

Under Carpet Heating Alternative

An alternative solution to installing under carpet electric heating for ensuring the safety of your system is in slab heating, or placing the cables into a concrete slab, screed or self-levelling bed. This is to protect them from damage while also ensuring the even distribution of heat throughout the entire floor space. Again, be sure that your system meets the relevant approval standards for embedded cable installations.

A typical installation requires 20-25mm of screed over fixed heating cables or 12mm of self-levelling compound over mats to provide a thermal mass and protection from the nails and smooth edges. The floor heating warms the surrounding screed or levelling bed which then warms the floor covering above.  This heat then radiates from the carpet upwards into the rest of the room.

It is imperative to consult your floor heating supplier and/or builder before pursuing the installation of electric underfloor heating directly under a carpet floor covering to ensure they adhere to the above mentioned standards. If you are an end-user who is concerned that your floor heating was installed incorrectly under your carpet and are concerned about any risk, please contact us for a free assessment.

The European-made Comfortline Excel is an upgraded model of the Comfortline Original series setting an even further refined standard for the quality and workmanship behind these high temperature overhead heating panels. This new series of panels for both indoor and outdoor applications reflects over two decades of manufacturing and design expertise and experience.

  • Simplified Installation: The new model has been lengthened by 50 mm simplifying the connection to the supply conductors. This provides more space for the terminal and makes the connection of the product to the supply conductors much easier. The terminal is also now accessible from two sides after lifting the lid allowing for greater ease of installation.
  • Extension of the non-heating part of the heating rod by 50mm: Allows it to extend as far as the terminal, thus eliminating the need to pass the conductors from the heating rod into the space containing the terminal.

THE SCIENCE OF RADIANT HEATING:
